Linux is easier to install than XP

When you buy a new PC today, unless you hunt down a Linux system or you buy a Mac, you’re pretty much stuck with Vista. Sad, but true.

So, when I had to get a new PC in a hurry, after one of my PCs went to the big bit-ranch in the sky with a fried motherboard, the one I bought, a Dell Inspiron 530S from my local Best Buy came pre-infected with Vista Home Premium. Big deal. It took me less than an hour to install Linux Mint 5 Elyssa R1 on it.

As expected, everything on this 2.4GHz Intel Core2 Duo Processor E4600-powered PC ran perfectly with Mint. But, then it struck me, everyone is talking about having to buy Vista systems and then ‘downgrading’ them to XP Pro, how hard really is it to do that.? Since I had left half the 500BG SATA hard drive unpartitioned, I decided to install XP SP3 on it to see how much, if any, trouble I’d run into. The answer: a lot.

First, thanks to my Microsoft TechNet membership I could download an XP disk image, which included all the patches up to and including SP3. Many people aren’t going to be that lucky. They’ll need to install XP and then download perhaps hundreds of megabytes of patches. Boy, doesn’t that sound like a lot of fun?

If you don’t have a MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) or TechNet membership, there are two ways to approach this problem. The first is to manually slipstream the patches into an XP installation CD. You can find a good set of instructions on how to do this in Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD. While the article is for SP2, the same technique works for XP SP3 as well.

The other way is use nLite. This is a program that allows you to customize Windows XP and 2000. While it’s primarily so that you can set up Windows without components you don’t want, such as Internet Explorer 6, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, or Messenger, you can also use it to create fully patched-up boot/installation CDs. I highly recommend it.

This time I didn’t need to use either one. I simply put in my newly burned XP SP3 CD and went through the usual XP installation routine. Within an hour, I was booting XP.

If this had been Linux my work would have been done. With XP, I soon discovered my job was just beginning. I soon found that XP couldn’t recognize my graphics sub-system, a totally ordinary Integrated Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 3100; the audio system, the Realtek HD Audio chipset, or, most annoying of all, the Intel 10/100Mbps Ethernet port. How can an operating system in 2008 not recognize an Ethernet port?

Well, XP doesn’t.

Fortunately, Dell includes a CD with the full range of Windows drivers on it. With it, I was able to install the drivers for all the equipment without much trouble. Within another hour, I finally had a working XP SP3 system.

That wasn’t so bad was it? Well, here’s my problem, except for Dell, I don’t know of any vendors who ship their PCs with driver disks anymore. The usual vendor answer for when you have a driver problem is for you to go online, search down the right driver, download, and install it. Except, of course, had that been my only course of action, I would have been up the creek without a paddle because XP wasn’t capable of letting me talk to my network.

Mint, on the other hand, let me point out, had no trouble with any of my hardware. Thus Ubuntu-based Linux recognized the equipment, it set it up and let me get to work. It was Windows that proved to be a pain in the rump.

Greg Kroah-Hartman, a prominent Linux developer, is right. Linux Journal recently reported that he recently told an audience at the Ottawa Linux Symposium that “Linux supports more different types of devices than any other operating system ever has in the history of computing.”

Linux isn’t perfect that way, as Kroah-Hartman would be the first to admit. Based on what I experienced, though, Linux is much better than Windows at supporting modern hardware.

We have this illusion, that’s just because Windows works on the systems it comes pre-installed on, that Windows has great built-in driver support. No, it doesn’t. Once you move to installing Windows on a new system, you’ll quickly find that Linux, not Windows, has the better built-in hardware support.

Yes, that’s right. Linux, not Windows, is easier to install on a new PC. Just something to think about as you get ready to strip Vista off your new computer.

Top Gear has had its fair share of mishaps. There was that time the Stig took the Koenigsegg CCX on an off-track excursion, and of course Hammond's horrific crash in the jet dragster. The latest incident involves the one and only Nissan GT-R press car in Great Britain. Apparently it was involved in a fender bender in the Isle of Man after a photoshoot for Top Gear magazine. It seems that the GT-R wasn't damaged too badly, despite the pic of its naked arse above, and the same exact car ran up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed only a couple days later.

Kurenai Wataru, a young man who was born from a female vampire and a human man, suceeds his father currently as the violin player in an atelier. This man, transforms into Kamen Rider Kiva. As Kiva, he confronts the FanGire, a clan of vampires who feed off of human life energy to survive. In truth, his father, Kurenai Otoya, also fought against the FanGire, 22 years ago. The story of the fight of 2 generations, from father to son.

The man, Kurenai Wataru, plays a violin in an atelier, in succession of his father, Kurenai Otoya. This man, with his detached, but happy, personality, transforms to Kiva. Though he fights against the Vampire Clan, FanGire, a race who feed on the life energy of humans, he knows not how he is able to transform, or why he even fights. In truth, it is a fate he has inherited by his father, who had fought the FanGire 22 years ago. In this way the show is split, between the father’s struggle of 22 years ago, and Kiva’s struggle of the present. The bonds of parent and child bridge the gap between the two stories.

HENSHHINN!!

kurenai Wataru transforms into Kamen Rider Kiva by use of his companion, Kivat Battosansei, installing him into his henshin belt. When the chain on his right leg is broken, the strongest rider kick in history is unleashed upon an enemy. In addition, Kiva is aided by three other Support Monsters who have been imprisoned inside of CastleDran- A werewolf, a gillman and a frankenstein’s monster. Each monster allows for a different form change, allowing Kiva to adjust his abilities to specific situations.

Garuru Form (Werewolf)
Garuru, a werewolf, transforms into the GaruruSabre, a sword. When Kiva gains the sword, he can gain this form. Garuru Form is fast, good with weaponry, and increases Kiva’s shrewdness and cunning in battle. The Support Monster, Garuru, is a violent and hot-blooded character, often acting on impulses before thinking them through. He is voiced by Kenji Matsuda, who previously played Kamen Rider Zanki in Hibiki.

Basher Form (Gillman)
Basher, a gillman, transform into the BasherMagnum, a gun. When Kiva gains the gun, he can gain this form. Basher Form gives Kiva the cool attitude of Basher, and to match with his weapon, is a form suited for aim and precision. Good at long range combat, he is able to determine an enemy’s weak points from far away, and then capitalize on them. Acts as Kiva’s guide around CastleDran. Voiced by 13 year old Ogoe Yuuki, who guest starred in episodes 5 and 6 of Den-O.

Dogga Form (Frankenstein’s Monster)
Dogga, a Frankenstein’s Monster, transforms into the DoggaHammer, a gauntlet. When Kiva gains the gauntlet, he can gain this form. The form, focusing on unbelievable strength, has a finisher which is virtually unbeatable. Is unmatched is pure battle. Voiced by Sportsman No.1’s, Eiji Takigawa

-Rider has 4 kinds of partner monsters (Vampire, Werewolf, Gillman, and Frankenstein)

-Respectively, they each form a weapon except for Vampire, who's finisher is a kick. Werewolf- Sword, Gillman- Gun, and Frankenstein- Hammer

-The monsters, and finishers are summoned/activated via a whistle

-Tentative name for first form is still "Vampire Form"

-Rider's weapon system seems to be called the "Monster Arms"

-The Frankenstein Hammer, is only a hammer in name. The weapon itself, a knuckle-attachment, which goes on the rider's hand, acting as a gauntlet

Names of the Individual Monster Arms

All the weapons are summoned the same way Coumorin is used for the kick, via the Rider's whistle. The whistle awakens them, unchaining them from their "Statue Monster" Form.

-The Gillman/Creature of the Black Lagoon based monster, won't be a Gillman himself, but in the form of a shark. The rider form will, most likely, look a bit like Creature From the Black Lagoon.

-When Blood blows his whistle, the monsters awaken, and launch from the DragoCastle to join him in battle

That aside, the animals fit. I think the Frankenstein and Mummy monsters may be the only ones to look humanoid. More info as it comes.

-Blood's form colors are Red, Blue, Green and Purple, apparently to match Kuuga

Here's what I would guess:

Red- Vampire Form
Blue- Werewolf Form
Green- Gillman Form
Purple- Frankenstein Form

Coumorin himself is the belt buckle. The art we've seen is just that, art. But he's basically part of the henshin device. Names of the other monsters have been found, though it's just rumor right now:

Werewolf- Ookamin

Gillman- Hangyodon

Frankenstein- Frankeru

KR the Next will be premiered on October 20, 2007 ! This movie introduces the third kamen rider called V3 (after KR Ichigo and KR Nigo) which is played by Kazuki Sato, who previously act as KR Drake in Kabuto. Who are they? Actually they are part of the first Kamen Rider Series back in 70's. The first movie called KR the First was the remake and published in 2005. This movie is the sequel of the first movie. I believe, they did pretty good job in designing the costume without eliminating the original element from back then.

How bout the plot? Really simple. To save Chiharu (Erika Mori), which is V3-Shiro Kazami 's (Kazuki Sato) sister. And of course to fight Shocker (Destron in V3 series back then). KR Ichigo-Takeshi Hongo(Masaya Kikawada), KR-Nigo-Hayato Ichimonji(Hassei Takano) are also back to help to SAVE the WORLD, hahaha...

Click once on OK to close the Virtual Memory dialog box; then, select OK in the two other dialog boxes until the main desktop is again shown.
Reboot your system, and PAGEFILE.SYS will be created. You'll notice that the file appears in the partition as defined in the Virtual Memory dialog box. Your system should now run more efficiently, especially when several concurrent applications are in use at the same time.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysian Muslims have called for a ban on the blockbuster movie "Evan Almighty," saying it is offensive to their religion, state media reported Friday.

Malaysia's influential Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) said the comedy, which plays on the story of Noah's ark and features actor Morgan Freeman as God, was insulting to Islam.

"The movie refers to the big flood during the time of Prophet Noah, but this has been turned into a comedy which is insulting to Islam," Secretary-General Maamor Osman told news agency Bernama.

"Featuring a human being as God in the movie is also against Islam," he added.

"Evan Almighty" is the sequel to "Bruce Almighty," which was banned from cinemas here after arousing objections among conservative Muslims.

Censors eventually approved the movie for DVD and VCD release and it has since been broadcast on television.

Other foreign movies to have been banned from public screening on religious grounds include "Brokeback Mountain' and "The Passion of the Christ."

"Evan Almighty" is scheduled to be screened in Malaysian cinemas from August 23.

In it, Steve Carell plays a newly-elected congressman ordered by God to build an ark.

Opera

Opera was the first browser to support the Bittorrent protocol. Their BT support is quite solid, but not very advanced and doesn’t support some well-known BT extensions. In short: nice for new users, but not for regular downloaders.

Pros: Nicely integrated, multi-platform.
Cons: No advanced features (missing DHT, peer exchange, encrypted transfers), not open source.

BitFox

BitFox is a quite new extension for Firefox, made by the student Joshua Hendo. The backend of the extension is based on Rasterbar’s libtorrent, so it supports quite some advanced BT features. The project is in a VERY early stage of development, and can only be obtained from SVN, so I haven’t tested it yet.

Pros: Open source, using libtorrent, so a quite solid backend (including DHT).
Cons: Not usable yet, early stage of development, seems to run only on Windows & Linux.

FireStorm

FireStorm is quite similar to BitFox, it’s an extension for Firefox and still in pre-alpha development stage. They use the Mainline client as a basis, so they will probably support most BT extensions/features.

Pros: Open source, using the Mainline reference client as a backend.
Cons: In pre-alpha development stage, not usable yet, interface is quite ugly.

FoxTorrent

FoxTorrent is a project of the company Red Swoosh/Akamai, these guys have the funding and expertise to build a nice Firefox extension. This extension isn’t that well integrated in Firefox, clicking a torrent basically opens a webpage to the webinterface of an external application. The advantage is that closing your browser doesn’t stop the torrents from downloading.

Pros: Open source, torrent streaming/progressive downloading support, continue downloading even when browser is closed.
Cons: Not very well integrated in Firefox, no advanced features (missing port mapping, DHT, peer exchange, encrypted transfers).

AllPeers

AllPeers is also funded by a company, so you would expect a nice client. The whole interface looks very nice and clean, but they’re more focussed towards sharing URL’s/images/etc than downloading torrents. In the current stable version (0.60), there is not an option to download a regular torrent. They do have a My Torrents tab in the beta version though.

Pros: Clean and professional interface, also available as a bundle with FireFox
Cons: No regular torrent support (yet), no advanced features (missing port mapping, DHT, peer exchance, encrypted transfers)

Wyzo/FireTorrent

Wyzo/FireTorrent is very new, they released their first public version a week ago. The difference between the two is that FireTorrent is a BitTorrent extension for Firefox, while Wyzo is a full-featured customized Firefox browser including the FireTorrent extension. These guys managed to integrate BitTorrent support seamlessly in the Firefox download manager. FireTorrent also has the most advanced BT features of all the projects mentioned here. The Wyzo browser has some cool advantages over Firefox, like direct searching on social sharing networks (including Mininova) and Alexa/Pagerank integration.

Pros: Seamless Firefox integration, available as a bundle with Firefox (Wyzo), has all advanced features (including port mapping, DHT, encryption, peer exchange, STUNT).
Cons: Not open source, Mac/Linux version not out yet - will be released in a few weeks

Apple today announced (via a news release) that more than 1 million copies of Safari for Windows were downloaded in the first 48 hours since the free public beta was made available on Monday.

Many see Apple's release of Safari for Windows as an opportunity for Apple further attract customers to the Mac, while also raising usage of its Safari web browser, which would theoretically require more website developers to ensure that their sites work properly with Safari.

In related news, Apple today updated the Safari for Windows beta to 3.0.1, which patches some of the security flaws that were recently discovered in the software.
